Christianity in Society and Christian Nationalism – Part 2

Last week we began to look at the role of Christianity in society. We saw that Christianization can not be supported from Scripture. Christianization has not worked well in the past. History teaches us that when Christian organizations or hierarchies gain positions of direct political influence in the name of Christianity then it is only a matter of time before nominal Christians, wolves in sheep’s clothing, rise up to positions of influence within the church seeking the power held by the church. Obviously, this brings dishonor to the body of Christ and fills the church with ungodly leaders. The history of monastic orders in the Middle Ages is a perfect example of this. Several times godly reforming monastic movements gained so much wealth and power that they became complacent and worldly and the movement lost its effectiveness. It even came to pass that local nobles were allowed to buy the Continue Reading →

God’s Astronomical Love – Weekly Words Of Encouragement

For your steadfast love is great to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds. Psalms 57:10 (ESV) This verse is from a Psalm that David wrote when he had been anointed king and he was hiding from King Saul’s men who were trying to destroy him. In verse four he exclaims: “My soul is in the midst of lions;I lie down amid fiery beasts.” Yet he set his heart on a higher astronomical truth: God loves him and will be faithful to his promise (to make him king). In fact, God did just that and David became the most iconic king in Israel’s history and the ancestor of the Messiah. It worked out well for David when he trusted in God’s love and faithfulness; perhaps it will work out well for us! He really is our loving Father and he really will be faithful to his promises (though we must Continue Reading →

Refuge From Storms – Weekly Words Of Encouragement

In the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by. Psalms 57:1 (ESV) We all have emotional “storms of destruction” passing through our lives from time to time. They might be COVID, or loss of a job, or loss of a loved one, illness, isolation, current events or just winter blues. If we have several converging at once it can be challenging to maintain peace in our soul. In all these times we can take refuge in the outspread “wings” of God. Picture a mother eagle covering up her chicks with her powerful wings in their nest atop a towering perch, protecting them from any harm. What could challenge this eagle? No other creature could overpower her high atop their perch. No storm will dislodge her. During storms we can set our hearts within the heart of God, knowing that he is all-powerful. Consider Continue Reading →

Christianity in Society and Christian Nationalism – Part 1

As a former lawyer this topic is something I have given a lot of thought to. As a Christian in law school I developed a deep appreciation for the wisdom of the American Constitution. Through the years I have reflected on the role of Christianity in society. The goal of Christianization movements is the administration of a society according to Christian values. Some views are stricter than others so we find that there is a continuum of Christianization thinking. Like prosperity gospel teachers, Christianization teachers often take Old Testament passages that refer to Old Covenant politics or to the final fulfillment of the kingdom of God and apply them to our current age. Christianization thinking is tempting for Christians when they witness their society decline into self-worship and destructiveness. A term that is becoming synonymous with Christianization is Christian nationalism. Unfortunately, definitions of this term diverge, often according to the Continue Reading →

Does Your Heart Dwell In Heaven?

The purpose of this post is to change the reader’s conception of reality and where their life is. I hope that it helps to create a new orientation in your soul that aligns with God’s reality. We begin with Colossians 3:1-2: “If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth” (ESV). We can get an idea of what we seek by asking ourselves: “How do I actually prioritize my life?” We can get an idea of what our minds are set on by asking ourselves: “What do I value in my mind and treasure in my heart?” This orientation to things above is critical to our growth since the environment of our heart determines what we will become. If we Continue Reading →
