“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” James 1:5 (ESV) God wants to give us wisdom, which means knowing the good thing to do in various situations of our lives. We all face difficult decisions, sometimes they are small and sometimes they are big. If you have a decision to make and it is not yet clear what to do, then God encourages you to ask Him. He wants to give you guidance. So spend some time praying and asking. Ruminate with God over your options. Read relevant scripture. Spend time listening in quiet receptivity before God. And take advantage of the wisdom of other believers and seek out someone who can give good advice. “And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true” I Jn 5:20 (ESV) Today there is an explosion of different ideas and philosophies that claim to tell us what is true. Many are versions of the idea that the only truth is what you choose, or what is inside you. This idea just leads to narcissism which is why we see so much self-centeredness and destructiveness in the world. But Jesus gave us understanding. He showed us God’s truth so that we could stay anchored in reality. And God’s reality is that He loves us and leads us to love one another and grow communities (churches) that shine with His light. “For he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. ” I Jn 4:4b (ESV)  This verse is one of our bulwarks against all that would tear us down! God is all powerful and his Spirit lives in us. We have his spiritual power that keeps us focused on love and truth and no spirit, no person, no institution, and no destructive desire inside our outside of us can cause us to stumble when we stay centered on God’s Spirit who has made us his temple and lighthouse for the world. “Whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him.” I Jn 3:22 (ESV). This promise appears in the middle of a discussion about loving one another, which John says is the main commandment. So the promise and encouragement in this verse is that our commitment to actually loving others and to pleasing God leads to answered prayer. God blesses those who follow him in Christ by giving the good things they ask for. We know that sometimes devout Christians don’t receive what they pray for; John partly explains this later in Jn. 5:14 where he says that we should pray according to God’s will. But when an obedient Christians prays for what God promises they can be confident that God will say yes. “When Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.” I Jn 3:2b (NIV) This is one of the greatest promises in Scripture. We want complete inner peace as well as perfect harmony with others. Most of all we want to experience the rapture of being in complete unity with God. We know we can’t have these things now but this verse promises all these things for us. We can say this because the barrier to all these blessings is our complete transformation into the image of Christ. Once we become fully like Christ we will have all these blessings and more. As we focus our hearts on this daily we receive power to throw aside everything in our lives that interferes with Christformation!
