Most of us say that we want authentic fellowship, but are we practicing this when we have the opportunity? Specifically, are we bearing one another’s burdens as Scripture teaches? Do we pay attention to the burdens of our brothers and sisters in the Lord, whether we are at our church building or not, and look for ways to support them, emotionally or materially? This is essential for authentic community. Today we will meditate briefly on Galatians 6:2: “Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ” (NLT).
Absorb. What is the ‘law of Christ’ that this passage refers to? (See Mt. 22:39; Gal. 5:14; Rom. 13:9; 1 Jn. 3:23; James 2:8.) Imagine Jesus standing in front of you speaking these words to you; how does this affect you? Ruminate on it, understand it and let it sink in.
Feelings. How did you feel as you absorbed this verse? Did you feel fear? Express your feelings to God. Talk to him about any resistant feelings and resolve them as much as possible.
Truth Commitment. Invite God to reveal your heart then ask yourself: Do I believe that obeying the law of Christ (to love one another) includes sharing my burdens with others and bearing others’ burdens? Am I committed to this truth? Express your thoughts to God.
Action Commitment. Ask yourself: Do I regularly share my burdens with others and receive Christian encouragement, and if not, why not? What is the root of any lack that I have in this area? How do I deal with any root issues? Am I now willing to pursue the practice of sharing my burdens?
Prayer. If you are willing, tell God that you are committed to pursuing the practice of sharing your burdens with others.
Action. Determine the next step in pursuing this and then take it as soon as possible.
Reception (Contemplation). Ask God to show you anything that you have not fully embraced as well as anything else he desires to show you, or ask Jesus a question about this topic. Sit with a quiet and open heart for at least 60 seconds.
Are you willing to look for ways to share burdens over the next week? Be on the lookout for opportunities.
