“Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do.” Phil. 3:17 (NIV)
At first this statement by Paul might seem too audacious. Why would he tell the Philippians to imitate him instead of telling them to imitate Christ? He does talk about imitating Christ in other places so why would he direct the Philippians to focus on Paul? Is he being prideful? Is he too focused on himself? Is he misleading the Philippians? I don’t think he has any of these faults.
I think Paul understood the power and importance of modeling for spiritual growth. It is easy for us to say that we aren’t the one that others should look to for an example. But really, if we are saying that Jesus changes lives and makes them good then shouldn’t we be able to prove it with our life? Isn’t there a challenge to us to “let our light shine before others”?
When I think about those who influenced me the most it was those who were the best examples of Christ. This is the power of modeling. This is why Paul says in I Cor. 11:1 “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.” He was okay being a model to others because he was following another model: Christ. He even said the Philippians should “keep your eyes on” others who act like Paul. Thus, it is important that we be models for others. Though we might fear thinking of ourselves as models to imitate it seems that this is the implication of this verse and of Jesus’ statement that we are the “light of the world,” (Matt. 5:14). This is essential to our mission to make disciples of Jesus; discipleship requires models to imitate.
In a culture where many are apathetic or opposed to Christianity our example is our biggest weapon. The examples of devout Christians overcame all the other religions in the ancient Roman Empire. We can do the same thing today.
If we abide in him it shouldn’t be too long before we can at least think of ourselves as lights of Christ to others. Perhaps this is the first step: to remind ourselves that we are to be models. Then make this part of your heart, that you are a model. Then actually be a model! You don’t have to be perfect or fake it; just do the best you can. This is not just for your benefit, but for the benefit of others, Christians and non-Christians. Models bring people closer to Jesus. The people around you need models.
